SHS will last six years, says the education minister.
The Second Cycle Institution, often known as Senior High Schools (SHS), will soon be extended from three to six years, and the Education Ministry will soon ask Parliament for its permission.
The Pre Tertiary Education Act, which specifies that the Junior High School constitutes a component of Basic E in Ghana, will be amended to do this.
At the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, CHASS, 60th Anniversary celebration, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum hinted that the expansion would ensure that pupils are adequately equipped and prepared for the Second Cycle Institutions across the nation.
Dr. Adutwum claims that the High School model used recently in the nation was imported from the west, where scientific labs and libraries were well-equipped, unlike in Ghana. Therefore, it is crucial that practical measures be made to reform basic education in order to contribute to the development of a globally competitive educational system.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, stated that the government awarded several GETFUND projects for the expansion of dorms and classrooms in most schools as well as the approval of teacher recruitment, among other things, in an effort to address challenges of the second cycle institutions.
He thus has high hopes that other interested parties would work with the government to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 by making education in the nation sustainable.
Even though basic education has been made free, not all Communities in the nation have access to well-furnished educational facilities, according to Professor David Kofi Essumang, Vice Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University, who gave the keynote presentation at the event.
He claims that second cycle institutions give students a thorough education with the main goals of building on the fundamental skills and knowledge they have already obtained.
The conference was themed “60 years of shaping second cycle education in Ghana, the challenges and successes in contemporary time-the role of stakeholders”. The occasion was also used to present citations to some past executives who have contributed immensely towards the success of CHASS
